And some more ham! My father mentioned buying a ham to split with me in December, but then didn’t mention it again. I then purchased two hams at Sam’s Club right after Christmas. One was $5 off, the other $10 off. Two days later my father brought over the ham he had bought. I made ham (great northern) and beans and vacuum sealed the rest. I have 10 packages with 2 cups diced, 1 package with 1 1/4 cups diced, 1 package for beans (bigger chunks) and 2 packages sliced. I also frozen some Canadian bacon and ham steaks I had in the fridge. I’m set for ham for a while!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vyVKCH4q9MlkRfM_QF2KEecm1cmfJ8YzjGOboB2fuBrJNMsqprjYd5y94C4N8ut8uH3YAVTCQ4WNdLgo-k0c1bEHibq0D1JihUsBBuoypDxz3yK2F5fHZwu9gAySrRkDeSMVfs6_AbA9aoLlcZm_3X2-coCH6q6ci9zwGQLOxzLQS640Jb_DD6KU/s4032/413C776A-2AA0-4760-857C-3627D7BBEC69.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vyVKCH4q9MlkRfM_QF2KEecm1cmfJ8YzjGOboB2fuBrJNMsqprjYd5y94C4N8ut8uH3YAVTCQ4WNdLgo-k0c1bEHibq0D1JihUsBBuoypDxz3yK2F5fHZwu9gAySrRkDeSMVfs6_AbA9aoLlcZm_3X2-coCH6q6ci9zwGQLOxzLQS640Jb_DD6KU/s320/413C776A-2AA0-4760-857C-3627D7BBEC69.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Pasta! This was SO good! I’ll make it again, but alter the recipe some. I thought it was too salty. I think I’d spray the casserole, rather than melt the butter. I would not season the pork chops. And I’d probably top each pork chop with a TBSP of crushed croutons, rather than use the entire bag. Oh, and I subbed sliced from a block Mozzarella cheese as I didn’t have any Swiss cheese. My slices were thicker than sandwich slices as the recipe calls for, but cheese is never a bad thing! I spend too much at the grocery store for a family of One! I don’t go to the store and buy just what I need, rather I browse the isles and add extra things to my cart. All reasons to challenge myself to a pantry challenge. </p><p>My goal is to not visit a grocery store for all of January and February. I’m allowing visits to Sam’s Club for dairy, bread and fresh produce. I am not bringing anything into the house that has to be frozen.</p><p>This is my basement pantry set up. I plan to share a picture of the freezer another time. Focus items are; Bisquick that expired in October. It’s a small box, shouldn’t be hard to use up. Minute Rice that I bought a couple of years ago during CoVid and expires* in May. Old Fashion Oats. I thought I had more than I do, but I easily use the quick cooking oats, but not the old fashioned oats. Pepper ridge farms dry season stuffing. I have four bags, two of two varieties! I do not need four! </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4fdboZJABkAk7dgQd2A-H9Docgb481YjzrIHogB8_M20LlmkVxiSyFpuTWQWOTvnvhyaceWWlo72bGu-WG_9qWu08amsvqvPNCD1wQB1Jsxw-6kfQJ-7avIlB2LQ2pb_oLuhNSVv_aWqgcMKflbXoVpgR8gxw-hGy68hqD5ZYElhBunZHhElFxcb/s4032/EF0F9237-2BCB-488A-9441-CF1AEC16B98C.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU4fdboZJABkAk7dgQd2A-H9Docgb481YjzrIHogB8_M20LlmkVxiSyFpuTWQWOTvnvhyaceWWlo72bGu-WG_9qWu08amsvqvPNCD1wQB1Jsxw-6kfQJ-7avIlB2LQ2pb_oLuhNSVv_aWqgcMKflbXoVpgR8gxw-hGy68hqD5ZYElhBunZHhElFxcb/s320/EF0F9237-2BCB-488A-9441-CF1AEC16B98C.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Canned chicken. A few of those are brownie mixes, but the cake mixes are all chocolate! And the frosting, it’s all vanilla! It’s rare that I make a cake, maybe once a year, so this is an example of browsing the isles, seeing a good deal and buying what I don’t need! Oh, I spy a spice cake mix. I saw a video on YouTube where someone made cookies using a spice cake mix and canned pumpkin. </div><div><br /></div><div>Grape jelly. Some items “expire” others have best by dates. In years past, I would have tossed an item the second it expired. I no longer do, but I make a habit of going through the pantry once a month and pulling items that I need to eat, which reminds me, I pulled a can of sauerkraut and got hotdogs last month for hotdogs and sauerkraut. Need to have that this month. A friend told me to add 1/2 tsp of baking soda to expired cake, brownie, cookie mixes and they’ll be fine. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you look, you’ll see I write the expiration date month and year on every item when I’m putting it away in the pantry. Someone years ago did that on a YouTube video I watched and I’ve done it ever since. Sure easier to find the expiration date when I store it than to try and find it when going through the pantry. <p></p></div><div>My last visit to a grocery store was right before Christmas. I’ve been to Sam’s Club since then, but haven’t added anything to the pantry. I gave those three to my father and his porch cats have loved them. The igloos are used to ship refrigerated RX and I’ve checked with thirteen local pharmacies and only one has gotten in touch with me and they gave me three more igloos. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">*I tried a half dozen times to get these photos in the correct order and wasn’t able to. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7LT141AkInxL0m_OIbJ6jykBmzwM5da4Is0KSCSD0pp-YnQ7FB2s8kE8QFTm6IEbVBAw4ZJSKcyT82DEZXHfbHRY_oA9_VaAqpAxCuqgfMCfGZKiECtOUEJGDq0I6awT0YtpHjCQUQVCIXaEDh3sil2T0gmM9rOaLeKq22Qm4xsuFCM4WbDotara_/s4032/4C819D12-4267-4D9B-9532-33AC7CCBF4A3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7LT141AkInxL0m_OIbJ6jykBmzwM5da4Is0KSCSD0pp-YnQ7FB2s8kE8QFTm6IEbVBAw4ZJSKcyT82DEZXHfbHRY_oA9_VaAqpAxCuqgfMCfGZKiECtOUEJGDq0I6awT0YtpHjCQUQVCIXaEDh3sil2T0gmM9rOaLeKq22Qm4xsuFCM4WbDotara_/s320/4C819D12-4267-4D9B-9532-33AC7CCBF4A3.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><p><br /></p>If you can get your hand on the igloos, they’re very easy to construct. Stitch night in December includes treats. I opted to bring dill pickle
dip (recipe can be found under the label Appetizer) and pretzel ring snowmen!

Kind of worried! It’s been a few years! I am not on Facebook or Instagram by choice, but needed a platform to share life and stitching. I’m getting older! I looked at a cross stitch pattern for several long minutes trying to recall if I stitched it. I’ve decided to write down the date on the pattern and to post here when I’ve finished something. </p><p>Anyhow, for a week at the end Of November and into December, the Festival of Trees is held to support SLI an organization that helps individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It’s a free event with the trees being auctioned off to support their organization. </p><div>This is a few of the trees on display. </div><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirg2hSDIuJZnwuCtJhHOKkR47UjdD8vfAfYPRdydJQfOynlxBVSLDjRULa_iDXO3OZNc58R4Z8OV1dIDFjhhhwli5bPDPOj90w5yEiTEPtFXt4YrGA5NFpsa_iyoLqaOnjz5mqGYSljtVG7P4pqBHOQ2WNTxstcEkEhhyIkXuyMTVJKOTJtwRZ5T0i/s4032/EA1AAC9F-B836-4F00-8BC1-D1B67C0DF844.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirg2hSDIuJZnwuCtJhHOKkR47UjdD8vfAfYPRdydJQfOynlxBVSLDjRULa_iDXO3OZNc58R4Z8OV1dIDFjhhhwli5bPDPOj90w5yEiTEPtFXt4YrGA5NFpsa_iyoLqaOnjz5mqGYSljtVG7P4pqBHOQ2WNTxstcEkEhhyIkXuyMTVJKOTJtwRZ5T0i/s320/EA1AAC9F-B836-4F00-8BC1-D1B67C0DF844.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGV83RwjWkkbst4-a7lmjQ4ZzbPmiEH72OjwYzxrX8IZcjdmVOl_gleZfWt7aC7v2BPMmnXJOOoEw3c7gmvkM1oKub0WwC5xT8YTFo4dGm2lfIKoAZZ9p3zX5iijLk8afIhQAY_AG7L7KYNimP7NfCR4TWYcOFxLOssb_raKnED24LPCSmKK9-arAw/s4032/C84B894F-0805-4254-AB53-62E020BDA5B1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGV83RwjWkkbst4-a7lmjQ4ZzbPmiEH72OjwYzxrX8IZcjdmVOl_gleZfWt7aC7v2BPMmnXJOOoEw3c7gmvkM1oKub0WwC5xT8YTFo4dGm2lfIKoAZZ9p3zX5iijLk8afIhQAY_AG7L7KYNimP7NfCR4TWYcOFxLOssb_raKnED24LPCSmKK9-arAw/s320/C84B894F-0805-4254-AB53-62E020BDA5B1.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhacppq-S3GbIbkYbVjIbW0KNggTnWok6OWsO0Qx5joUMWNVSnBJ8NUP_QXDApx9VqeKxwu1KfG_eom2gKcwDJFqeZ9VXR5nva8xkvctbA-8BP-xOYWm8Yfi5lu_LYNhIT2yQ02_lNlsS54G4W3KDF1wKP0bOOnduXfZ5kM_oUXHNrsW4T-fv5PkPjV/s4032/357A9289-71C6-462A-9DBE-02E96BB141BF.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhacppq-S3GbIbkYbVjIbW0KNggTnWok6OWsO0Qx5joUMWNVSnBJ8NUP_QXDApx9VqeKxwu1KfG_eom2gKcwDJFqeZ9VXR5nva8xkvctbA-8BP-xOYWm8Yfi5lu_LYNhIT2yQ02_lNlsS54G4W3KDF1wKP0bOOnduXfZ5kM_oUXHNrsW4T-fv5PkPjV/s320/357A9289-71C6-462A-9DBE-02E96BB141BF.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUKKUq3KXhMiQ3idr8J47rEeezc1u42RwdVzUF9vZhmIssH3F6WRtdkICRvAu62l7hjB1MNcK1TlUbGfGPV8duL_8vb7Nmx5uGX0nkMdxGNLk3Q8k1UekH7VmtLj373TBGZy8EBcD_NPB60taGlIHUfMhHNp7T6n32IjDVywCtoWW0l7N_uu3f8hiI/s4032/3E7340FD-BB3B-4BF0-8270-88DF1E0FCDBB.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUKKUq3KXhMiQ3idr8J47rEeezc1u42RwdVzUF9vZhmIssH3F6WRtdkICRvAu62l7hjB1MNcK1TlUbGfGPV8duL_8vb7Nmx5uGX0nkMdxGNLk3Q8k1UekH7VmtLj373TBGZy8EBcD_NPB60taGlIHUfMhHNp7T6n32IjDVywCtoWW0l7N_uu3f8hiI/s320/3E7340FD-BB3B-4BF0-8270-88DF1E0FCDBB.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQmhk1sGDjgGJxyDu6s0MjD4jX73y2MeErqZqH35qXZBxx9Iky_v5zZfgPq2sB1rPRb7F_lug9Uol1YlWdQIH9cHY-0TJPuOwil27di1fgd1G3gKPacsIk-_hXSa53KuAldzTKxiuaww83o6JdUHKrLg1EjDhjl4I5ayryUlJGImTNcHodUVv8FY7n/s4032/1D24DC85-3274-4345-89D0-F50F26C3C0BF.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQmhk1sGDjgGJxyDu6s0MjD4jX73y2MeErqZqH35qXZBxx9Iky_v5zZfgPq2sB1rPRb7F_lug9Uol1YlWdQIH9cHY-0TJPuOwil27di1fgd1G3gKPacsIk-_hXSa53KuAldzTKxiuaww83o6JdUHKrLg1EjDhjl4I5ayryUlJGImTNcHodUVv8FY7n/s320/1D24DC85-3274-4345-89D0-F50F26C3C0BF.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><p></p><p>At that time I was cross stitching a Santa kit I had gotten at an estate years before. I don’t decorate with Santas, but had needed something to stitch and the Santa worked great as it came with everything needed to finish the pattern. I hadn’t a clue what I would do with the Santa after I finished him till I saw the trees and thought maybe I could donate a Santa themed tree for their fundraiser next year. While I don’t decorate with Santas, with a couple exceptions, I have a lot of Santa patterns. I stopped at our local thrift store and bought a 6’ skinny Christmas tree and think I’ll give it a try! Stay tuned for some stitched Santas. </p>Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16627287902591490601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2719173288836960271.post-24233271510460946462018-04-09T12:17:00.000-05:002018-04-09T12:17:09.776-05:00This was good soup! I'm afraid I won't get this piece done this year at this pace, so I'll be stitching on it (if I can keep my plans) the entire month of April. </div></div><div><br></div><div>Happy Stitching! </div>Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16627287902591490601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2719173288836960271.post-29244393647569573492018-03-01T21:31:00.000-06:002018-03-01T21:31:05.895-06:00Floor Grout Cleaning <div>I've known I've needed to clean and seal the tile grout for maybe a year. Probably longer, but have dreaded doing it. The weekend before last was a four day weekend. I enjoyed Friday and Saturday and was determined to knock this off my to-do list Sunday and Monday. </div><div><br></div><div>I had researched tile grout cleaners online. They sell products specifically for cleaning grout, but I was hesitant to use them as most spoke of cleaning white grout. My grout isn't white. So, I tried a homemade recipe of baking soda and water to make a paste. </div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_7e29_4aaf_f23d_9043" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xXsUKX72xxA/Woo6D92dsGI/AAAAAAAAJwM/IouyrplQslIOMImKHNwvVpgMzTVA1G9AgCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>That I rubbed into the grout with my fingers. </div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_a487_5156_9000_d7f8" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xwf5Crp1Zto/Woo6EdRePJI/AAAAAAAAJwQ/Ik4UQeSGbv49GF1Z7Wx9Ik32b-rT9HoXgCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>After applying the baking soda, I sprayed over it with white vinegar. The mixture bubbled and I let it sit for approximately 5 minutes before scrubbing it with a toothbrush. I quickly grew tired of this method, especially since I didn't feel it was working. </div><div><br></div><div>More research and I decided to try Resolve carpet cleaner. </div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_6505_fac_e522_6814" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p3p13wxCDEE/Woo6ETJoaDI/AAAAAAAAJwU/J-GVqpbXDbI7VmxVOYwa2PjP4dZOAj09QCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>If you're doing this, I suggest doing half of this at a time. Eight to ten tiles at a time would have been better. </div><div><br></div><div>This worked! I knew it was when I scrubbed with the toothbrush as the brush and suds got dingy looking. Something the baking soda paste never did. </div><div><br></div><div>I sprayed the Resolve on the grout, waited five to ten minutes and the scrubbed it using a toothbrush. I wiped with a damp cloth as I went and mopped with warm water each section before starting another. </div><div><br></div><div>It's far from perfect, especially the last blocks when I was beyond done with cleaning the tile! It's much improved though and happy with the results, I sealed the grout after two days of drying. </div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_9d5a_825a_dc17_b77f" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bGXDK0hVIqU/WpJNEgCRfgI/AAAAAAAAJxA/CXeQzvcqrjERvIYhQatjcruVO9pyY2NgQCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>I applied two coats of sealer. It. Did. Not. Work. Maybe had I done a third or fourth coat? I don't know. I stitched it on the suggested fabric; PTP Ale using the suggested threads except for 3 changes. I substituted Victorian Motto Autumn Red for the GAST Pomegranate as I didn't believe I had enough to finish the house. I ran out of GAST Picnic Basket and stitched the words at the bottom in 3-4" cuts of Weeks Havana and am happy with how they match. I didn't stitch the insides of the windows. They were to be stitched using the yellow thread shown, but I didn't like the look and left them empty. </div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_47be_e285_6d8b_4563" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_gibWznqPfM/Wnt8IlCHLPI/AAAAAAAAJpQ/fBI7hWs0L1AWDK9xIc4uAOqHFm9ngo9JwCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>My third and fourth finishes for 2018 were Blackbird Designs Small Token Pins and Needles pin cushion. I started stitching these in 2009. I stopped I thought because I had messed up, but I didn't find my error when I picked it back up this month. Here is where I had left off;</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_80c8_8cd_d6af_89bc" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BafKdZK7k9k/WpOIVb4MaoI/AAAAAAAAJyc/ZM54Uy3RJj0PClprU-jHf6UuZaB94oyOQCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>And here is my finished pieces;</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_6a17_36b5_7942_8979" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--8cAZPjJjE8/WpOIWIwtd7I/AAAAAAAAJyg/CwJ57hCBai8hMjGISiHUzsjKLbDhceGJgCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>The color is more accurate in the second picture. </div><div><br></div><div>My fifth finish for 2018 is another piece where I shortened the pattern. I knew I wanted to stitch this as a memorial piece for my maternal grandmother. I also knew I hated the lower section. The colors were too washed out. I picked out all new colors and started this last fall on PTP Ale. I sat it aside in December to start other things. When I returned to it this month, I could no longer remember my vision for the piece with the threads I had selected. My friend Sue helped me change a few of the colors, but still I wasn't happy with it. I decided to frog the stitching at the bottom, finishing the part I'd started and called it good. </div><div><br></div><div>Here is the pattern picture;</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_c68a_50d_38b5_a27c" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pNyL6FKbnXc/WpOIXDd4JTI/AAAAAAAAJys/qgorlZoZlc8BdxhHaR9a-x1pubk7Ot7oACHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>And my finished piece;</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_875f_c3ce_9752_10" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yjUdQGMqQ1U/WpOIW8se5-I/AAAAAAAAJyo/C7LobgF8r2sh3CFq1rYtOzIap4M1LoZCgCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br></div><div>I've been spending the last focused on All Creatures Great and Small. Large pot. Chicken broth or stock, no added salt preferred. Bring to a boil. Add frozen reames noodles and shredded cooked chicken. Simmer till the noodles are done. <br>

The recipe comes from Tales of a Kansas Farm Mom's web site. I made this Superbowl Sunday while it snowed cats and dogs outside though we were only to get a dusty. Two days later when we were to get 2-5 inches, we got nothing! Zilch! The day before I made this soup, I was able to walk several miles outside. I'll share some pictures from the trail at the end of this post. Winter is hard and I try and enjoy the nicer days when we're blessed with them. <br><br></div>

Lemon pie filling, Alfredo sauce and a fruit crisp mix were on that list. All those items have been used. An enchilada seasoning packet remained. I found a recipe calling for one in the Fairbury NE D.A.R.E. cookbook and decided to give it a try. I made these for my father and never tried them, but he says they're excellent. <br><div><br></div><div><img id="id_f6e4_601d_b94_a39c" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Rt_dBT7MW0k/WnDv0qKtBhI/AAAAAAAAJjc/Bpj7FBX0kGUIXwGuxZYobDZFN_8OX1ebQCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br></div><div><br></div><div>To make brown a lb of ground beef. I had two January finishes. The first is Prairie Schooler Winter Wind stitched on PTP 32 Ct Wren with the called for DMC. This is WIP # my 30 on year of WIPs list. <br>
<br><img id="id_9f24_dab2_2be_8e1c" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Dc0nGOt_baM/WmuMBRtBkoI/AAAAAAAAJh0/NoyQauSju9oRk54z8U9_jYkIFy3IBQRgACHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br><br>
This is only part of the pattern. I didn't like this piece. I wanted a winter piece for a specific finish and thought this might be it, but the pattern annoys me! The birds are far from gone! I know this because I feed them! I have many winter only birds feeding in my yard and while its very cold out, there is never a bad birding season in Kansas. I decided to finish what I'd started, but not the entire pattern. I'm not sure how or when I'll get around to fully finishing it.<br>
<br>I continue to make progress on WIP # 31 Baby Is Cold Outside by Heartstring Samplery. I've run out of Picnic Basket, so all the windows aren't in on the house and the words are missing at the bottom of the piece. I am hoping to find a good substitute in my stash and not have to order one thread. <br>
<br><img id="id_5c04_750b_5129_4c2d" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d-ZgPvQeX74/WmuMCyURoLI/AAAAAAAAJiA/FDTR3PF-zMoGa_WnTkxe-iTCNexZO-PlwCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br><br>
I began on January 5 my 2018 Baptism sampler Barbara Ana's All Creatures Great and Small on PTP 18ct Wren. I got this far before deciding to start it on another fabric.<br>
<br><img id="id_a2e0_f5d1_7500_bbf0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/---71w_1w4lo/WmuMAkeUE-I/AAAAAAAAJho/Q-a-R4Uv--UlatbLXN1v5RQznIlDy2h4gCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br>
<br>Emily from Eclectic Possessions (Flosstube and Instagram) is stitching this pattern on PTP Haunted and I love it! Love it so much that I knew I wouldn't be happy with stitching it on Wren. I had PTP Haunted in my stash, but found a piece of PTP Lupine and decided to try it. I might have to change some of the browns, but surely I can figure that out. <br>
<br><img id="id_b5d0_e5f8_fb9e_eb01" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ngme3Lmj3Aw/WmuMBEWvTNI/AAAAAAAAJhs/GPepXD2e6rU098bjaVvM2FfHsGdR99fewCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br>
<br>It took forever to frog the Wren start, but I decided I had to do that before starting on Lupine. Upon frogging my Wren start this is as far as I got on Lupine. I'm only stitching this on the weekends, so it won't get finished anytime soon.<br>
<br>I started a small piece on Monday January 22nd for Kansas Day and finished it Thursday January 25. It was my friend Dede's idea to stitch something every January for Kansas Day. Two years ago I stitched a Prairie Schooler Santa with sunflowers;<div><br></div><div><img id="id_5c86_a081_ce49_6fdf" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qWkRheR-dYw/WmuMBGfw9OI/AAAAAAAAJhw/vjmSzKntwywWuCfThnDPVukr3LEeSWGkwCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"> <br>
<br>And last year I stitched a Prairie Schooler egg freebie that had a sunflower;<br>

This years Kansas Day piece is from a library borrowed book by Donna Kooler called 555 Cross-Stitch Sampler Motifs. I love this book and there are several things in it I'd stitch. Here is the front of my 2018 Kansas Day themed piece;<br>

<br>Oops, forgot his antennae! I had hoped to finish this into a small pinkeep, but its really small and I think it might make a better fob. First I am going to go through my fabric stash to see if I have any matching fabrics that might work as a fabric frame to increase its size for a pinkeep. If not, then fob it is! <br>

I've never had a word for the year before and am not a word for the year type, but someone asked what my 2018 focus Word was and Frugal came to mind. For the first time ever, I am honestly (rather than halfheartedly) budgeting using the Every Dollar app. One of the budget items is groceries. I haven't a clue what I spend on groceries in a month. First identified what all the grocery budget would be spent for. This will include toilet paper, Kleenex, make up, shampoo, toothpaste and laundry detergent. It will not include meals out (restaurants) or pet food/supplies.</span><br><br><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">I decided to budget $100 a month and then began to wonder what the suggested budget amount was for groceries. Per a Life Hacker article Americans spend 9-12% of our income on food, which is less than any other country. Life Hacker suggests one budgets 14% of their income for food. One hundred dollars is below the 14% suggestion and I began doubting the amount I had decided. Per the article, a thrifty food budget for a family of two under 50 years of age is $373.30, a liberal food budget for the same would be $743.10! Seven hundred dollars for groceries?!? I can't begin to imagine! </span><br>
<br><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Anyhow, I'm sticking with $100 month on groceries for now. It can always be changed at a later date. I have a well stocked pantry and freezer which will help keep the amount spent low for at least a few months. </span>

I bought several pounds. Sadly, I brought them home and left them a little too long, forgotten in their grocery bags in the basement. Several weeks too long. A few were lost from having been stored that way. Others have been eaten in the last couple of months and some where used to make two apple cakes in early December. I still had a lot of apples left, but some were beginning to look worse for wear. <br>

<br>I decided to make them into apple pie filling. Twenty-seven apples were cored, peeled, sliced and seasoned. <br></div>

<br>All that work resulted in three quart size bags full that were frozen and someday will be used to make apple pies! <br></div>

<br>Apple Pie Filling for the Freezer<br>
<br>8 medium apples<br>
2 Tbsp lemon juice<br>
3 Tbsp flour<br>
3/4 c brown sugar<br>
1 tsp cinnamon <br>
1/2 tsp nutmeg<br>
dash of allspice<br>
dash of cardamom (I omitted as I didn't have any)<br>
<br>Peel, core and thinly slice all the apples. <br>
In a large mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with the lemon juice, brown sugar and spices. <br>
Place in a freezer safe baggie, remove as much air as possible and seal.<br>
Freeze up to 3 months. <br>
The recipe I used suggested thawing before baking. </div>
